Ethiopia/AU: Angola prepared to fight corruption - State Secretary

Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, January 25 - The secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Tete António, on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, said that Angola is prepared to fight the corruption phenomenon and respond to the challenges reflected on the motto of the African Union (AU) 30th Heads of State and Government Summit happening in the Ethiopian capital. ,

Speaking to the press - after an audience with the AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, Josefa Sacko – Tete António said that Angola has accepted this compromise to tackle corruption, reason why it joined the African Union Convention on Corruption.

This issue will top the agenda of the Heads of State and Government, set for 28-29 January under the motto “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa's Transformation”.

The fight against corruption has been one of the priorities of the new Angolan Executive, with the Head of State pledging to put an end to the high levels of impunity verified in all sectors of the Angolan society.

“This is our current national discourse. If there is a topic that is being discussed a lot in Angola is the fight against corruption. This, at continental level, must also be done”, said the secretary of State.

On the other hand, Teté António also defended that it is necessary a certain work with the aim to make the continental organisation more relevant to the African peoples.

He went on to stress that the African Union cannot continue to depend on external donors, because like this it loses a lot of its sovereignty and independence.

“These matters are worrying the AU member states”, he reiterated.
