Ethiopia / UA: Angola leads Peace and Security Council

Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, January 26 - The Republic of Angola was elected Friday in Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, as chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPCS), for a two-year rotating mandate.,

The polling took place at the time of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), which prepared, within two days, the documents to be submitted to the 30th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the continental body, set for 28 and 29 January.

Angola, who entered the important body of defense and security of the continental organization for the third time, was elected on the first round together with Zimbabwe.

At the 32nd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, ten members (including Angola) of the Peace and Security Council were elected for a two-year tenure and five for a three-year term.

The body, which acts directly in the issues of conflict resolution in Africa, is comprised by ten members, and elected for two-year terms, and five members elected for three-year terms. Angola inaugurates its mandate on April 1, 2018 and stays in the body as from 2018 and 2020.

The election of Angola and the other members of the AU Peace and Security Council will be ratified by the Heads of State and Government at the time of its 30th Ordinary Session, running under the motto "Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Way to the Transformation of Africa. "

This defense and security body was set up on 26 December 2003 to assume a position of peace and rapid intervention in cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Africa.
